Newcastle Utd face competition from Fulham to sign FC Twente’s Douglas

DOUGLAS is close to finally sealing a move to the Premier League – with Fulham set to rival Newcastle United for his signature.

The defender, a long-standing target of Newcastle, will be allowed to leave FC Twente before the end of the transfer window, according to chairman Joop Munsterman.

Douglas is expected to play his last game for Steve McClaren’s side this weekend.

The 24-year-old, born in Brazil, is keen to move on after he becomes a Dutch citizen next week after five years of residency.

“The clubs (Newcastle and Fulham) have expressed an interest,” said Munsterman.

“If a proper offer is made, we will sell him, because he will leave next year on a free transfer.”

Meanwhile, United manager Alan Pardew has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for pushing an assistant referee.

Pardew shoved the official during his side’s Premier League win over Tottenham on Saturday.

He apologised unreservedly after the match, but it has not prevented the FA acting.

And Pardew now has until 4pm on Thursday to respond to the charge.

Given Pardew’s comments after the match, it seems unlikely he will contest it.

He said: “It was ridiculous and I apologised publicly.

He was right in front of me, I thought the ball was out, and I shoved him.

“I went to see him and told him it was stupid, and I don’t know what I was thinking.”

Pardew reacted angrily having thought the official, Peter Kirkup, had missed a throw-in for his side moments before Spurs shot narrowly wide.

He was ordered to watch the final 20 minutes of the match at St James’s Park from the stands by referee Martin Atkinson.
