NUFC trail Kenyan star Victor Wanyama

NEWCASTLE United will continue to monitor Kenyan international Victor Wanyama after the Celtic star admitted it was his dream to play in England’s top flight.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for the midfielder after a successful campaign with the Scottish giants.

The 21-year-old has spent the summer playing in World Cup qualifiers and is preparing to return for pre-season training with Celtic.

But after an excellent debut campaign in Scotland, Wanyama has dropped the strongest hint yet he could quit Parkhead.

Wanyama said: “I think the Premiership is the dream of so many players, so I’d be happy to play there. There are a lot of good clubs in England.

“It will be difficult to leave Celtic because I have just had a good season here and we are now playing in the Champions League.

“Celtic are one of the biggest teams. I’ve been happy here, and the fans have been brilliant to me.

“But it would not be a terrible thing for me if the club agree to let me go, and they were to get a good offer. They are the ones who decide.

“I’m proud I’m the first Kenyan to play in the UK, and I’d be very happy to be the first Kenyan to play in the Premier League.”

Wanyama only joined the Old Firm giants 12 months ago, signing a four-year contract following a £900,000 move from Belgian side Beerschot AC.

He played a major role in Celtic regaining their SPL crown over Rangers, operating as a defensive midfielder.

He is valued at around £7m by the Hoops which Newcastle would likely baulk at, though they will continue to watch the player as uncertainty over Cheik Tiote’s future remains.
