IMPRESSIVE ... Newcastle's Sammy Ameobi against Club Brugge.

SAMMY Ameobi’s finally up and running this season – and eyeing a Premier League chance.

Ameobi created the only goal of the game against Club Brugge last night with a superb run and pass.

The 20-year-old flicked the ball past an opponent before striding forward and playing in goalscorer Gabriel Obertan early in the second half.

Match report: Newcastle United 1 Club Brugge 0

United manager Alan Pardew made nine changes from the side which faced Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby.

And Ameobi and 21-year-old Shane Ferguson both impressed in the Europa League group game.

The pair missed the start of the season through injury.

“I thought we played well. Shane was very lively,” Ameobi told the Gazette.

“We’re top mates off the field as well as on it. I look forward to playing with him a lot in the near future.

“I think we both did a good job, and hopefully we can continue to do so.”

On the goal, Ameobi went on: “It was obviously good to get the flick-on and run at the defenders.

“I’ve assisted the goal, really, so I’m glad to be part of that.

“I think we played well. We had to defend well. There were points in the game where they had a lot of possession.

“They’re a good team – they can pass well and fast – but we secured the three points.”

Ameobi’s elder brother Shola came off the bench at the break.

The siblings played a one-two before Sammy set on his run upfield for Obertan’s goal.

And he’s looking forward to playing a lot more with him in future.

“It’s always a privilege to play alongside him (Shola), and hopefully I’ll be able to do that a lot more,” said Ameobi.

“I really enjoyed it. We’re on seven points now and top of the group.

“We’ll take it game by game, and look forward to the next game at Brugge.”

Pardew was full of praise for Ameobi and Ferguson after the game.

“(Shane) has got one of those left feet that you could peel oranges with,” he said.

“He hit three fantastic balls. I’m a big admirer of him. I like the way he plays the game.

“He is progressive – he’s a forward-thinking player. He wants to constantly attack, and I think he has got a big future at this football club, as Sammy has.”
