Boro beat Carlisle and Hoyte signs new deal
MIDDLESBROUGH have made a successful start to a busy weekend.
It began well yesterday when the npower Championship promotion hopefuls announced that experienced full-back Justin Hoyte had committed his future to the club by signing a new two-year contract.
And Boro followed up progress off the pitch with joy on it as they won 2-1 last night at Carlisle United.
Boro played some good football in midweek without getting the result at Carlisle’s League One rivals Hartlepool United where they were held 2-2.
But there were no such problems last night at Brunton Park, where Tony Mowbray’s side scored a goal in each half.
Striker Curtis Main grabbed the first on the half-hour when he fired high into the net from 12 yards.
Carlisle though equalised 10 minutes into the second half when former Boro striker Lee Miller planted a superb header past on-trial keeper Jayson Leutwiler.
However Boro were not to be denied and young striker Cameron Park netted the winner on 65 minutes.
Boro fielded several members of the club’s young prospects and two Hartlepool-born midfielders both had significant run-outs as subs, Ryan Brobbel getting the final 20 minutes and Matthew Dolan the last 15.
Boro were back in action again today at York where Hoyte was in the squad for David McGurk’s benefit game at Bootham Crescent.
“It’s great to get everything signed and now I can concentrate on the new season,” said the 27-year-old defender who joined Boro from Arsenal four years ago following a season-long loan with Sunderland.
“We have a lot of new faces and there is a great atmosphere in the dressing room. There is competition throughout the whole squad and that will drive everyone on to do well.”
