Boro boss Tony Mowbray insists Scott McDonald has Riverside future

MIDDLESBROUGH boss Tony Mowbray insists that Scott McDonald has a future at the Riverside Stadium.

The 28-year-old (above) forward was left out of the squad which won at Bury in the Capital One Cup First Round at the weekend.

McDonald’s omission raised fresh doubt over his place in Mowbray’s plans, especially with the Boro chief hinting at further recruitment in the striking department.

It was summer signing Emmanuel Ledesma who started in attack alongside last season’s top marksman, Marvin Emnes, at Gigg Lane.

January arrival Lukas Jutkiewicz is also set to return from injury next month and that would knock McDonald further down the pecking order.

And, when asked about the Australian frontman, Mowbray said: “There’s no situation, he just wasn’t included in the squad.

“We’ve brought some new players in and I want to get Ledesma going and he managed to score.

“He’s working very hard and Luke Williams looked exciting when he came on.

“He has had a really good pre-season and deserves his chance.

“Other players will get opportunities. Scott just needs to get his head down and keep working hard and see what happens.”

Mowbray has been linked with moves for both Nottingham Forest striker Ishmael Miller and Stoke forward Ricardo Fuller in recent days.

And, despite adding no fewer than eight new faces to his squad during close-season, the Teesside chief is still on the lookout for fresh blood.

“I think the team is a bit young still, a bit inexperienced around the top end of the pitch,” he said. “We want to try and address that if we can.

“There is maybe some scope for us to work on that over the next two or three weeks.”
