Match report: York City 1 Middlesbrough 2

MIDDLESBROUGH completed a 2-1 weekend double when they followed up Friday night’s win at Carlisle with victory by the same scoreline at York City.

Scott McDonald and Merouane Zemmama scored the goals in Boro’s penultimate pre-season friendly.

Tony Mowbray was happy with what he saw seven days before the campaign gets under way at Bury in the Capital One Cup.

Boro warmed up for the serious business at Bootham Crescent in more ways than one.

The temperature was sweltering and perhaps that contributed to the easy-paced opening exchanges in the benefit match for York player and Boro fan, David McGurk.

But the game burst into life on 23 minutes when McDonald headed powerfully past Michael Ingham from a cross by Emanuel Ledesma.

York made a host of changes at half-time and Boro looked the stronger unit again in the second period.

But that did not stop the League Two new boys equalising on 71 minutes after John McReady was fouled in the box. Jamie Reed made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Boro upped their game and sub Curtis Edwards was unlucky not to put his team in front, Ingham saving well.

However, Boro were not to be denied and Zemmama’s low drive from the edge of the area found the net via Ingham’s right-hand post.

Jonathan Woodgate, starting for the first time since re-joining his hometown club, looked in imperious form during his 67 minutes on the pitch.

And Mowbray, looking for a number two keeper to Jason Steele, ran the rule over giant Spaniard Jacobo Sanz.

The former Vallodolid keeper had a fine game though had little to do.
