Former Peterborough playmaker Marcus Maddison has signed for non-league side Spalding United FC.

The 27-year-old recently threatened to quit professional football after a frustrating loan spell at Bolton in League Two.

Maddison’s parent club Charlton officially announced the player’s departure this week when the club confirmed their retained list.

It was later revealed that Maddison, who came through the ranks at Newcastle, had signed for Spalding United for the 2021/2022 season.

The playmaker, who has previously been linked with Sunderland, will join up with former Peterborough team-mate Gaby Zakuani, who now manages Spalding United in the Northern Premier League Central Division (the seventh tier)

Maddison told the club’s website: “When Gaby reached out and offered me the opportunity to get involved with what he’s trying to build at Spalding, I felt like it was something I wanted to be part of. I look forward to getting fit and showing the gaffer what I can do”
