Exclusive: World champion Savannah Marshall has warning for Olympic rivals
SAVANNAH Marshall today delivered some bad news to her Olympic rivals – she plans to get even better for the London Games.
Marshall was today back home in Hartlepool – exhausted by a 22-hour journey from China, not to mention her title-winning exploits at the World Championships.
But the marvellous middleweight lived up to her nickname of Silent Assassin by killing all talk of going for gold in our capital in August.
Marshall is just 76 days away from making her Olympic debut, but she insists London will NOT be on her mind this week when she plans to “chill out” with her family and friends.
“I still can’t describe how this feels,” said Marshall, who won gold with a thrilling 17-15 final win over Azerbaijan’s Elena Vystropova in Qinhuangdao on Saturday.
“I went with the aim of qualifying for the Olympics. That was always my goal and whatever I did on top of that was a bonus.
“I was the only one who had to get to the final to qualify for London, so I think I deserved my place.
“But I’m not even going to think about the Olympics or say anything about them.
“I’m over the moon to have got there but I just want to chill out this week and relax before getting back into the gym next Monday.”
Marshall’s breather is a richly-deserved one for the Dyke House girl who became only Britain’s second world gold medallist, after Frankie Gavin in 2007.
“I am going to enjoy this week but I’m looking forward to getting back to Sheffield,” she said.
“I have lots to work on and I know I need to keep getting better.
“Of course I was pleased to be world champion but I wasn’t happy with my performance in the final so I know I need to keep improving.”
